SO HOW DO YOU SURVIVE WITH BOTH SITUATIONS?
To me the difference between art and design is this:
Art tells a personal story.
Design tells someone else's story.
Art doesn't require understanding from the audience.
Design most importantly requires understanding from the audience.
And creating art and design while being located in Ohio presents a series of challenges. Opportunity, collaboration, inspiration, exhibition, are much more limited when working in a small-market city.
Working for someone else only makes creating art and design even more difficult; you have less control over your design and less time for your art.
In 2001 I co-founded leftchannel, a motion + design studio. Comprised of multidisciplinary graphic designers working as a collective, each of us has graphic design abilities but each also provides a unique skill - mine is photography. Within leftchannel we maintain a healthy balance between art and design but to maintain my sanity I needed an additional outlet in the arts. In 2001 I formed redbritain photography after a brief - but inspirational - visit to Great Britain. redbritain?s essence is capturing working-class lifestyles through street photography, exploring the universal beauty in those that create a living with their hands.
To maintain my sanity I work 10 months of the year on leftchannel, and then spend up to 2 months a year focusing exclusively on photography - balancing art and design.
