Spotlight: Who's Who in Design

Who’s Who in Design
Lisa Dagley, The Virginia Opera

Lisa Dagley is the phantom of the Harrison Opera House. As the graphic designer for the Virginia Opera at its Norfolk venue, Lisa Dagley’s designs serve to promote opera education and outreach, opera socials such as the “Operatini,” and promotional material for upcoming operas of the season. But, unlike the Phantom, the cheerful and soft-spoken Dagley is very content to stay out of the spotlight. When the Opera House is filled with people, her designs prominently displayed as artwork on the walls, posters on easels and pamphlets on tables, Dagley performs. Like the Phantom, Dagley remains unseen, slipping quietly through the throng of people walking through her own private art gallery.

As the Virginia Opera’s in-house designer, Lisa Dagley is responsible for advertisements, posters, and brochures that promote the Opera. Last season, with input from the marketing and public relations departments, Dagley designed the artwork for the season based on the artwork for the logos.

“I love my job,” Dagley says through a wide smile, “and I’m quite lucky.” When asked about advice for new designers, Dagley says it’s simple: “Believe in yourself, first of all,” she says, “and don’t be afraid to play around with what you do.”
